I'm travelling with an eSIM. Why is my carrier billing me for roaming charges?
During international travel, some people prefer to keep their regular phone number active so they can call/text normally, while other people decide to switch off their regular phone number to avoid carrier fees for calls and texts.
Your cell phone carrier might have placed you on a carrier travel plan, which charges a flat daily rate for each day of your trip. These plans are triggered each day the carrier detects you are using your primary SIM internationally (either for calling, texting, or data).
OPTION 1: Disable your primary SIM until you're back home.
This means you would NOT be able to get make/receive phone calls, or send/receive texts on your regular phone number.
(If you have an iPhone, you could still use iMessage and FaceTime, however, if they're set up to include your Apple ID.)
OPTION 2: Tell your carrier to cancel the travel plan going forward and only be billed per call/text.
This means you can still use your phone number for calls and texts, but you will be charged pay-per-use fees for each one. If you have an iPhone, iMessages won't count as texts if they're set up to include your Apple ID.
If you are seeing multiple charges per day, it's likely because you're using your primary SIM for calling and texting, and your cell phone carrier is charging you pay-per-use fees for each call/text.
We have instructions on disabling your primary SIM during travel, which will prevent these fees, but you will not be able to use your phone number until it's turned back on. eSIMs can support other calling and messaging options, but not anything tied to your regular phone number.
Please reach out via live chat or email (support@alosim.com) if we can help walk you through either of the options above.
