What's the difference between an eSIM and a SIM card?
The primary difference between an eSIM and a SIM card is that one is physical, and the other is fully digital, embedded onto your device.
A SIM card is a tiny plastic chip that stores your mobile network information. Fully removable and stored in a little slot on the side of your phone, it connects your device to your carrier.
An eSIM (embedded or electronic SIM) has the same function as a SIM card, except it is fully digital and built into your phone.
Some of the key difference between a SIM card and an eSIM are:
- Installation - SIM cards are manual and need to be inserted physically to activate while an eSIM can be activated via automatic setup or a carrier’s app
- Storage - Many newer devices can store multiple eSIM profiles, whereas most devices only have 1 slot for a physical SIM card.
- Convenience - eSIMs make travel or temporary numbers extra easy to use by enabling you to download a plan without visiting a store
- Security - eSIMs cannot be removed physically, adding a layer of security by eliminating any risk of theft or loss
